For this week we are celebrating the late, great Taylor Hawkins and breaking down my personal favourite groove of his from the track 'Rope' by Foo Fighters. This beat is in the chorus of the song and features an awesome sounding pattern between the bell of the ride and the snare. This groove has inspired a few of my ideas in the past with it's nod to South American styles being brought in to modern rock. We will also take a look at how you can borrow from the great drummers of the world and create to ideas of our own. For this week's lesson we have got a delightful drum lick that we are going to lead with our weaker hand (in my case, my left). The sticking is a six note pattern, beginning with a left hand paradiddle followed by a double kick. The chop works well as a drum fill simply played between the kick, snare and hi hat, but can be orchestrated around the kit. Although this is probably an intermediate level drum fill, beginner level drummers can certainly learn to play this fill, albeit at a slower tempo as it essentially just single strokes throughout. Happy New Year Drummers! For the first lesson of 2021 we have got a gratuitous two measure sextuplet/16th note triplet drum fill that will only be viable in vary rare situations. The lick is made up of three sticking patterns - RLRLKK, RLRLKKRLK, and RLRLRL. You can of course orchestrate this around the kit as you like, but for this lesson we will maintain a clockwise motion around the kit. For this week's lesson we have got a monster sounding drum fill that is actually really simple to play. The only real barrier you will encounter is your own hand speed. We have got 32 single strokes subdivided into groups of 6,4,4,8, and 10 with accents on a cymbal with a kick at the start of each group. I have taken this idea from one of the fills that you will find in 'Unsainted' by Slipknot.
